We are excited to invite undergraduate students to send in abstracts for the IEEE ETHICS-2025 conference! If you are working on research related to Emerging Technologies, Ethics, and Social Justice, and are currently pursuing your bachelor’s degree, we would like to hear from you!
About the Conference and the Student Track
The ETHICS-2025 conference will take place June 6-8 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and focuses on the theme “Emerging Technologies, Ethics, and Social Justice.”
ETHICS-2025 is sponsored by the IEEE Society on Social Implications and hosted by Northwestern’s Department of Black Studies. The IEEE Chicago Section is a technical cosponsor. This conference will be fully in-person.
The ETHICS-2025 Student Track offers presenters the opportunity to meet, discuss their work, and network with researchers and educators from academia and industry. The event will provide an environment in which both new and advanced students can gain experience, build community, and ask questions.

Student Track Topics:
We invite submissions that address the following topics:
- Social, Ethical, and Environmental Implications of Emerging Technologies
- Automation, AI Ethics, and Social Justice
- Social Innovation and the Digital Transformation
- Ethics, Regulation, and Emerging Technologies
- Perspectives on Emerging Technologies from Humanities and Social Sciences
- Teaching AI Ethics

Eligibility:
- Students from all disciplines are invited to participate.
- At the time of the conference, presenters must be current undergraduate students (i.e. they must be currently enrolled and/or have at least one semester of study remaining before receiving their bachelor’s degree).
- Both individual and team submissions are welcome. Team submissions should note the presenter(s) and a primary contact with their submission materials.
Student Track Presentation Formats:
The undergraduate track at ETHICS-2025 will involve both oral presentations (as part of a student panel) and poster presentations (as part of the conference poster session). Please indicate your preference for one or the other format when you submit your abstract for review.
- Poster Presentation will involve:
- A printed poster sized 48” x 36” showcasing your research
- You will stand with your poster during an open poster session where people can look at your poster and ask you questions about your research
- Oral Presentation will involve:
- A 10-12 minute presentation of your research (with Powerpoint slides)
- You will present your project to an audience during a student panel and have a few minutes for questions following your presentation
Abstract Guidelines: Length, Scope, and Format
Abstracts should be 250-350 words in length (excluding references), and they should:
- Identify a clear and focused central topic that will be the subject of the presentation;
- Outline a logical structure of ideas/argument/key takeaways that the presentation will include;
- Incorporate a reference to relevant research/contexts as needed.
Based on past reviewers’ comments, we recommend you include the following in your abstract:
- A clear and descriptive title for your project
- The significance or purpose of your project
- Any relevant background information and research
- The methods used in your project
- Any findings you may have or your expected findings
- Where this research is going in the future (if applicable)
Submission:
Abstracts must be submitted as a PDF to this Google form.
The Google form will ask for the following:
- Author name(s)
- Email address(es)
- University name
- Program
- Year of study
- Preference for poster or oral presentation
- Descriptive title of the presentation
- PDF upload of the abstract
Review, Notification, and Registration Process
Each abstract will be reviewed by the Student Track committee to assess quality, insight, relevance, and methodological vigor. Authors will be notified by the end of April, 2025.
All accepted presenters will be required to register for the conference; subsidized rates may be available. Registration details will be provided to all successful applicants.
