Ray Zhang – Technical Leader of Protection, Control & Automation, National Grid, UK
Ray Zhang is currently working as the Technical Leader of Protection, Control and Automation within National Grid, having overall technical responsibilities for the Secondary Systems within the UK Electricity Transmission. Prior to this position, he was the Technology Development Manager, responsible for innovative solutions in the area of HVDC, FACTs Technology, Smart Grid as well as Strategic Asset Management. Since joining National Grid in 1996, he has held a number of technical and managerial positions, successfully led and delivered many major developments including Western Link HVDC, Hutton Series Compensation as well as IEC61850 based Protection & Control Applications.
As the technical leader, he also has duty to liaise and direct National Grid R&D activities, and represent the company in the national and international technical committees. He has been actively involved in various CIGRE Working Groups, in 2012 he was elected as the UK Regular Member in CIGRE Study Committee B5 (Protection and Automation).
Over the years Ray has had many involvements in directing and promoting the collaboration between the industry and academia, recently he was appointed as an honorary Professor by the University of Birmingham. Ray Zhang has a PhD in Power Engineering, he is a Chartered Engineer, member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
