The twelfth Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT 2021), sponsored by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), will be held on February 15 – 18, 2021 as a virtual meeting with the theme “Technology Solutions for an Evolving Grid”.

ISGT 2021 is a forum to discuss the latest issues, trends, and emerging and innovative technologies for grid modernization in the face of challenges of a rapidly changing environment. The drivers behind this change include the dramatic increase in deployments of renewable and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), the evolving resilience threats, global health crisis, and new business and operating concepts and services. The conference will feature plenary sessions, panels, technical papers presented in poster sessions, and tutorials.

The key focus of ISGT is to facilitate in-depth multi-disciplinary discussions among the participants – sharing experiences and lessons learned, and raising the awareness and understanding of the latest concepts, applications, and technologies. The theme for ISGT 2021 is “Technology Solutions for an Evolving Grid” with three tracks: 1) Agility and Resilience of Critical Energy Infrastructure, 2) Innovation and Adoption of New Grid Technologies, and 3) Distributed Grid-Edge and Behind-the-Meter Technology.

The Conference Organizing Committee invites practitioners and researchers worldwide to submit papers on conference topics outlined below. Accepted papers presented at the conference by the authors will be posted in IEEE Xplore (accepted papers will be presented in poster sessions). Also, to promote a more efficient and comprehensive engagement among participants, ISGT 2021 will endeavor to make the papers available online in advance of the conference to allow registrants time to prepare questions and comments for the presenters to address during the conference.

The Conference scope covers the three tracks and could include the following general topics:

Track 1: Agility and Resilience of Critical Energy Infrastructure

  • Grid resiliency and reliability assessment, metrics and evaluation methods
  • Lessons learned from grid operations under global health crisis conditions
  • Operational and regulatory coordination challenges and possibilities at the transmission and distribution systems
  • Application of “Big Data” and advanced analytics to grid planning and operations
  • Technologies and methodologies for advancing physical and cybersecurity
  • Taking advantage of distribution system and other flexibility for enhanced resilience
  • New business models to enable resilience

Track 2: Innovation and Adoption of New Grid Technologies

  • Technologies and methodologies addressing grid integration of DER and Demand Response, including DERMS, ADMS, microgrids, and next generation smart inverters
  • Distribution markets and system platforms (DSP, DSO, etc.)
  • Transportation electrification including autonomous electric vehicles and charging infrastructure
  • Transactive Energy Systems and emerging hardware/software technologies (Internet of Things, Blockchain, etc.)
  • Next generation AMI, PMU, sensing, communications and control
  • Applications of Big Data, advanced analytics, cloud computing, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence
  • Advanced transmission concepts and projects, including planning and operations tools, HVDC, etc.
  • Emerging substation and distribution automation technologies (advanced FLISR, Volt-VAR Optimization, etc.)

Track 3: Distributed Grid-Edge and Behind-the-Meter Technologies

  • Edge computing, control and analytics
  • Smart controls, analytics, and sensors in end-use devices
  • Smart cities applications, including smart buildings and smart street lighting
  • Cyber-physical security of grid-edge devices

Manuscript Submission

Complete manuscripts (maximum length 5 pages, and in accordance with the PES Author’s Kit) are to be submitted by October 2, 2020 (no later than 11:59 PM Eastern) via the document submission portal.

In addition to general criteria mentioned in the Author’s Kit, the following criteria will be used in evaluating the submissions:

  1. Evidence of actual deployment or application
  2. Representative of a state-of-the-art capability or practice
  3. Ability to inform strategies for advancing grid capabilities

Accepted papers must be presented at the conference before they can be included in IEEE Xplore. Papers will be selected to be presented in a poster session. Please contact 2021isgt@ieee.org with any questions.
