Title: Get More out of the Grid, with Enhanced Grid Technologies

 Abstract:

Grids are confronted with profound changes, unseen since probably over a century. Climate change and the resulting emissions reductions targets are already forcing significant technological, regulatory and market shifts on electrical systems, and grids in particular. These last 10 years have seen most countries around the world (Asia leading the change) adopt significant shares of renewal production, which bring their own challenges to electrical grids: intermittency, lack of inertia, and geographic distribution mean that the old grids built decades ago need to be re-configured to enable these large shared of distributed renewable generation. In addition, the expected very large increased in electricity consumption (driven by fossil fuel substitutions in heating and transportation, and large data centers) will only accelerated those needed changes. Responding to these, a number of new players have developed alternative technologies to boost grids capacity, resilience and flexibility, which can be deployed quickly and often at a fraction of the cost of the new lines and substations. Dynamic Line Rating, High Temperature Low Sag conductors, Power Flow valves and digital twins AI based solutions to name but a few are now being deployed at scale by many utilities around the world. This talk will present how these innovative grid technologies are re-shaping the way utilities address the mounting challenges of emissions reductions and growing electricity usage.
