Nobody steps in the same stream twice

Heraclitus once claimed that nobody steps in the same stream twice, for it’s not the same stream and you are not the same person.  For the 2023 conference, ProComm welcomes participants to Ithaca, New York on the campus of Cornell University.  Ithaca—and the Cornell campus—is famous for its waterfalls, streams, and lakes, and from those natural elements we draw our 2023 inspiration. 

We encourage proposals for papers, panels, and workshops that draw from the nature of change. Even if we teach the same courses or work in the same companies for many seasons, we all know that each class or each project is a new experience. And if we doubted that before, the last few years have revealed the nature of constant change. We are not the same. Our students and coworkers are not the same. And the world is not the same. 

We invite you to share work that explores the shifting dynamics of all that we, as professional communicators, do.  Whether you are in industry or the academy, come and share innovative research, dynamic on-site workflows, changing pedagogies, efforts to integrate social justice into our practices, updated communication technologies, discussions of the ethics of those technologies for our profession, and more. We particularly encourage reports on emerging best practices from industry practitioners. 

IEEE ProComm 2023 looks forward to continuing its legacy of innovation and support for its members–one foot on shore and one foot in the changing stream.

Submission Formats 

​​For ProComm 2023, you can participate in three possible ways in addition to attending:

1. Propose a paper

2. Propose a panel

3. Propose a workshop

Paper Proposals (Full Papers, Brief Papers, or Extended Abstracts)

For Papers, speakers will typically have 15-20 minutes to present their work. Topics will be grouped along thematic lines during a 75-minute session.

  • Full Paper. Full Papers are appropriate for late-stage research projects with conclusive results; mature, theoretically-grounded position papers; or papers reporting on a well-tested professional or teaching practice.
  • Brief Paper.  Brief Papers are appropriate for research and position papers that are works-in-progress, or papers reporting on short-term or experimental professional or teaching practices.
  • Extended Abstract.  Extended Abstracts are appropriate for participants who would like to bring new ideas to the table for discussion.

All paper proposals will undergo double-blind review. For the first stage of review for short and long papers, submit 350-500 word abstracts. Submitters of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a paper for second-stage review. For the first stage of review for extended abstracts, submitters may opt to submit a 350-500 abstract or the full extended abstract (500-1000 words). Templates for the final submissions (not proposals) for full, brief, and extended abstracts are below.

Panel Proposals

Panels are 75-minute sessions with collaborating presenters. Panels may be organized around a general topic or they may include multiple perspectives on a more specific topic. All members of the panel must register for and attend the conference.

To propose a panel, the organizer should submit a proposal (up to 1000 words) that provides a brief description of the panel’s overall goals and each panelist’s contribution to the panel discussion. If the panel is accepted, a camera-ready version of the proposal must be submitted for inclusion in the proceedings. 

Individual panelists may, if they wish, also submit a paper (Full, Brief, or Extended Abstract) for review and possible publication in the proceedings. These papers should be submitted at the second stage of review along with the panel proposal.

All panel proposals will undergo double-blind review. The template for the final submission for Panel based papers is below.

Workshop Proposals

Workshops include one or more facilitators presenting a 75-minute “how to” or “about” session addressing relevant practices, issues, or technologies of interest to professional engineers, technical communication specialists, and/or people teaching in those fields.

Prospective workshop facilitators should provide a 500-1000 word proposal of the envisioned content and shape of the workshop (what is this workshop about?), its stated goals (what will attendees learn or take away?), its envisioned audience (who will benefit from attending?), as well as any relevant background information about the workshop facilitator(s) to demonstrate their expertise on the topic. Workshops will be published in IEEE Xplore with the “Workshop” designation at the head of the paper title to serve as a record of its inclusion in the conference. 

Workshop proposals do not undergo double-blind review and are selected by the conference team based on the presenter’s expertise, fit, and need. The template for the final submission for Workshop based papers is below.

Deadlines

  • January 13, 2023 at 5pmET: Proposals for Full Papers, Brief Papers, Extended Abstracts, Panels, and Workshops are due via the conference website.  You can submit your proposals at this link.
  • February 12-15, 2023: Proposal submitters will be notified of acceptance status.
  • March 20, 2023 at 5pmET: Full Papers, Brief Papers, Extended Abstracts, and Panel submissions for accepted works are due (fully written with full IEEE cites and ready for close review).
  • April 13-15, 2023: Accepted authors will receive comments and notes on their work.
  • May 8, 2023 at 5pmET: Final versions of all submission types, along with copyright releases, are due for publication in the proceedings.
  • July 17-20, 2023: ProComm 2023 at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA!

IEEE Policy on AI-Generated Text

The use of artificial intelligence (AI)–generated text in an article shall be disclosed in the acknowledgments section of any paper submitted to an IEEE Conference or Periodical. The sections of the paper that use AI-generated text shall have a citation to the AI system used to generate the text.
