Wayne Stensby is the Chief Operating Officer of ATCO Energy Systems. With 35 years of experience spanning the breadth of the energy value chain, Mr. Stensby is responsible for the strategic direction and operations of ATCO’s natural gas and electric utilities, including the company’s interests in Puerto Rico. Collectively, these businesses provide safe, efficient, and reliable energy to millions of homes and businesses in hundreds of communities.
Prior to his appointment as ATCO Energy Systems’ Chief Operating Officer in June 2023, Mr. Stensby served as the inaugural President & Chief Executive Officer of LUMA, a Puerto Rico company created to repair, rebuild, and restore electric utility service for over 1.5 million customers on the island. Mr. Stensby’s broad expertise in the energy industry helped initiate the historic transformation of Puerto Rico’s electric system. LUMA’s rebuilding of the Puerto Rican grid represents the largest capital investment in energy projects in Puerto Rico’s history and one of the largest ever funded by the U.S. federal government.
Prior to assuming leadership of LUMA in 2020, Mr. Stensby was the Executive Vice President, Corporate Development, and was responsible for the growth of the company’s global portfolio of investments in premier energy infrastructure. While in this role, Mr. Stensby led ATCO’s competitive bid for the 15-year contract to transform Puerto Rico’s electric system and spearheaded the strategic divestiture of the company’s Canadian fossil-fuel generation assets. Mr. Stensby served as Managing Director, Electricity, from 2015 to 2019, and oversaw the early completion and subsequent sale of the award-winning Fort McMurray 500-kV West Transmission Project in northern Alberta—the longest 500 kilovolt (kV) AC transmission line in Canada. From 2014 to 2015, he led ATCO’s Australian operations as Managing Director & Chief Operating Officer, ATCO Australia. Mr. Stensby holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta.
