Duration: 7 Hrs (Live: 3 hrs.; Recorded: 4 hrs.)

5G is not just an evolutionary upgrade of the previous generation of cellular networks, but it is a revolutionary technology envisioned that will eliminate the bounds of access, bandwidth, performance, and latency limitations on connectivity worldwide.  5G technologies bring in a universal connectivity angle that has not been present in the earlier generations of wireless technologies. With the potential for 5G networks to provide anytime anywhere connectivity to anything, the number of applications or domains which can leverage this kind of connectivity will be quite large. 5G will be the connectivity fabric of a new era of information technology that will transform every sector of the economy and society. 5G has the potential to enable fundamentally new applications, industries, and business models and dramatically improve quality of life around the world via unprecedented use cases that require high data-rate instantaneous communications, low latency, and massive connectivity for new applications for mobile, eHealth, autonomous vehicles, smart cities, smart homes, Industrial IoT, to name a few.

Many application domains have started looking at 5G and 5G-like technologies to leverage the new features and facilities provided by the networks like ultra-high speeds, ultra-low latency, connecting massive number of devices which need on and off connectivity, and other such requirements.

Smart Cities are considered as one of the high priority Application domains for 5G. The operation of Smart Cities relies enormously on IoT, and 5G wireless networks are expected to be the great IoT enabler. By offering faster connections, more reliability and higher capacity at lower costs, 5G is a critical piece of the smart city puzzle, allowing cities to access the necessary fast connections to their infrastructure, devices and people. 5G offers the capacity to enable additional smart city capabilities and applications that require high-bandwidth and low-latency.

India, beyond developing a Unified Digital Infrastructure Reference Architecture for Smart Cities, is already looking at developing a 5G inclusive ICT Architecture for the Smart Cities’ Digital Infrastructure and defining a smooth migration path from contemporary architecture to the 5G inclusive ICT architecture.

The 5G revolution is therefore the enormous boost needed by cities in order to drive the creation of truly smart cities and regions, bringing about the improvements in social, environmental, and financial aspects of urban life that are needed to support our growing global population.

Our goal, during this track of the IEEE 5G Summit, is to provide a platform for communications and collaboration between industry, government and research on the state-of-the-art in smart cities and 5G across India and internationally. The objective is to provide a clear picture of where we are today, where we are heading with the future of humankind and how 5G can serve as an accelerator in making smart cities a common reality across the globe.

The track shall have eminent speakers from Smart Cities, ICT & 5G domains sharing their perspectives covering the cross-cutting topics around the 5G & Smart Cities (Infrastructure) interplay like – Vision, Strategy, finance and Standards; Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Buildings and Security; Connectivity, Mobility and the Environment; and conclude with a Live Panel discussion providing some valuable actionable insights to the stakeholders of Smart Cities & 5G Ecosystems.

Title: “Robust ICT Infrastructure – Backbone of Smart Cities

Abstract: 5G Technology provides complete transformation of mobile connectivity. It has the potential to serve to the communication needs of various economic verticals be it health, agriculture, transportation, industrial IoT, utilities and smart cities. Together with AI and ML, the 5G technology is capable of providing optimized and affordable solutions to large number of applications.

5G technology is able to configure differentiated services to cater to different use cases and application requiring high speed mobile broadband, low-latency applications, ultra-reliable communication for mission-critical applications and massive machine type communication for low-rate high density IoT applications.

Looking at the connectivity and ICT requirements of a Smart City, it can be observed that diversified kinds of connectivity are required for different applications of Smart cities. There is no single network to cater to all the requirements of Smart city and multitude of connectivity options are being used currently to achieve the objectives.

Features of 5G such as Network Slicing, Network function virtualization, Common API Framework, Service Enabler Architect Layer etc. make it versatile and robust to serve the needs of Smart City applications.

Abstract: Software plays an increasingly important role in 5G networks and the related connected world of devices and applications, and yet relatively little coordinated attention has been paid to the security and quality of the software supply chain. The first step to understanding this supply chain is transparency. This talk will give an overview of a “software bill of materials,” (SBOM) and how greater transparency can drive assurance, better quality, and help mitigate risks and vulnerabilities found deep on our supply chains. We will present on the progress made in an open, international, community-led process, and identify further needed work, potential research, and opportunities to engage.
