5G World Forum will showcase how innovation is spurred across many industry verticals using 5G technology. Most 5G use cases can be grouped under three main categories – enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive IoT and critical communications, each with its own speed, capacity and latency requirements. In this workshop, we will deliberate upon how 5G provides a platform enabling Internet-of-Things (IoT) to become a core part of our lifestyle and economy. We will discuss how 5G standards provision to include a large number of devices including the constrained ones. The underlying technologies e.g., advanced modulation techniques, network slicing capabilities, support for cloud-optimized distributed network applications that drive value for IoT will be discussed in detail.

3GPP has worked on Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC) mainly as an NR technology so as to meet the tight reliability and latency requirements of critical MTC (cMTC) use cases, such as robotics and manufacturing. However, these offerings could be complemented by introducing a new NR device type (“NR Light”) especially tailored to support industrial wireless sensor networks. NR Light communication is developed on NR building blocks, e.g., numerology and SSB bandwidth, but enhanced to meet the new requirements such as reduced complexity and lower device power consumption. These themes that are part of Release-17 will be presented to highlight 5G enhancements that facilitate realizing the vision of a global IoT network with a massive number of connected devices.

Simultaneously, significant operator investment in 5G technology, spectrum and infrastructure, together with the implementation of global standards, are helping to drive growth and increase market interest in the IoT. Although 4G will continue to be used for many consumer and enterprise IoT use cases through LTE-M and NB-IoT, 5G provides a range of distinct benefits that will be brought out during the workshop. The ultra-reliability and low latency of 5G will allow self-driving cars, smart energy grids, enhanced factory automation and other demanding applications to become a reality. Cloud computing, artificial intelligence and edge computing will all help to handle the data volumes generated by the IoT, as 5G boosts network capacity. This 4-hour workshop will build upon fundamental technology, establish technology cross-play and delineate how 5G platform facilitates secure IoT applications and services.
