Abstract

The Tutorial deals with the architecture in 5GS applicable to positioning of a User Equipment (UE) with NG-RAN or E-UTRAN access. An overview of the main positioning techniques will be provided.  In particular, the fundamental features of i) network-assisted GNSS methods; ii) observed time difference of arrival (OTDOA) positioning; iii) enhanced cell ID methods; iv) barometric pressure sensor positioning; v) WLAN positioning; vi) Bluetooth positioning; vii) Terrestrial Beacon System (TBS) positioning. In the second part of the tutorial details on theoretical and practical issues about fingerprinting approaches, implemented by using the WLAN (or a 5G femtocell), will be provided.

Speakers

Igor Bisio got his “Laurea” degree at the University of Genoa, Italy in 2002. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in “Information and Communication Sciences” at the University of Genoa in 2006. His Ph.D. was funded by the Italian Consortium of Telecommunications (CNIT). He is currently Associate Professor and member of the research staff of the Telecommunication Research Group and of the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Laboratory at the University of Genoa. He is IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Member and since 2012 to 2016 he was the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Satellite and Space Communications Technical Committee. He is also IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems, IEEE Computers and IEEE Signal Processing (SPS) Societies member. He served as Treasurer of the IEEE SPS Italian Chapter and is member of the Special Interest Group (SIG) about Internet of Things of the IEEE SPS. He is author of around 120 papers including journals, conferences and book chapters. He is recipient of several Awards. He is Associated Editor of the IEEE Internet of Things, IEEE Network, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technologies, IEEE Access, Elsevier Digital Communications and Networks and Wiley Security and Privacy Journals. His research concerns Signal Processing over Internet of Things, Context and Location Awareness, Adaptive Joint Coding, Safety and e-health Applications, Satellite Communication systems.

Andrea Sciarrone was born in Livorno, Italy in 1984. He got his bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering at the University of Genoa in 2007 and the master’s degree Cum Laude in Telecommunication Engineering in 2009 in the same University. In 2014 Andrea Sciarrone got the Ph. D. degree in Ambient Intelligence at University of Genoa with a thesis on Signal Processing Algorithms for Context-Aware applications over mobile platforms. He is currently Assistant Professor and member of the research staff of the Telecommunication Research Group and, of the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Laboratory at the University of Genoa. He is IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) and IEEE Signal Processing (SPS) Societies member. Since 2018 he serves as Secretary of the IEEE ComSoc E-health Technical Committee. He is author of around 50 papers including journals, conferences proceedings. He is recipient of the IEEE Cloudnet 2016 Best Paper Awards. His research concerns Signal Processing over Internet of Things, Context and Location Awareness and Safety and ehealth Applications.
