The promise of Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) – which adds a multi-modality component to Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) – are Safer Rides (enhanced road safety), More Efficient Rides (lower emissions and reduced congestion) and Connected Rides (infotainment), not forgetting a significant impact on productivity, jobs and growth, as well as on global competitiveness. This can only be achieved by building a complete ecosystem around infrastructure, equipment and services on top of 5G advanced connectivity, whilst mutualizing the huge investments in mobile and fixed broadband. 

The scope of autonomy spans road, rail, waterways and coastal maritime, and the implementation scenarios extend from urban to remote rural areas, transcending national borders, to ensure critical cross-border service continuity for autonomous vehicles.

Considerable effort and funding, in both Europe and North America, has been put into large-scale testing and validation, and even pre-deployment, of 5G for CAM/CAV. The common objective is to move towards large-scale deployment.

This event will bring together a variety of projects from Europe and North America, to share their experiences and present their main achievements.

Moderator: Jorge Pereira, EC

Dr. Jorge Pereira has been with the European Commission since 1996, becoming Principal Scientific Officer in 2005. He works, since 2016, in the area of Future Connectivity Systems, focusing on 5G and beyond, being responsible for the areas of Advanced Spectrum Management; optical-wireless convergence; Connected and Automated Mobility; and Public Protection and Disaster Relief.
He obtained the Engineering and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal in 1983 and 1987, respectively, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering-Systems from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, in 1993.
