Smart-Digital-Green Manufacturing Technology Panel

15 October 2021, 11am Eastern

The fourth industrial revolution “Industry 4.0” with its automation, digitization and exponential technologies is changing the landscape of the manufacturing industry. It is characterized by the emergence of digital and smart factories, closed intelligent manufacturing cells with cobots, manufacturing informatics, machine learning, etc. It is the transformation from physical to digital; “The Digital Twin” where “Big Data” from machines will be analyzed by researchers using statistical analysis, “Artificial Intelligence”, Internet of Things “IoT”, 5G, Data Analytics, etc. and then looped back to the machines for predictive maintenance and improving the performance of the machines. The products will evolve from a “traditional passive product” to a “smart connected product” using lots of sensors to provide a living experience and real time connectivity to the customers and the manufacturers for continuous improvement.

Stephen C. Veldhuis, McMaster University

My current research interests lie in the area of high performance manufacturing with a specific focus on precision and ultra precision machining. The main objective of my research is to enhance competitiveness of machining operations by improving productivity and quality while reducing cost. The approach taken involves a detailed framework for selecting and developing tooling followed by process optimization which aims to fully utilize the capabilities of the tool and machine.

Katherine Schmidt, Head of digitalisation and external collaboration, Siemens-Energy

I started my career as a Mechanical engineer with a focus in lean manufacturing in serial production before joining Rolls-Royce where I held several roles in R&D, supply chain and production in gas turbine in Europe. After the Siemens acquisition of the Rolls-Royce energy division in 2014, I returned to my hometown of Montreal to manage the factory, which is where I got introduced to Digitalisation.
