Abstract

The framework of standards for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), encompassing IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced, spans the 3G and 4G industry perspectives and continues to evolve as 5G with IMT-2020. IMT is increasingly becoming the sole means for accessing communication, information, and entertainment. IMT systems, technologies, and architectures supporting mobile broadband continue to evolve to improve on spectrum efficiency & utilization. IMT 2020 (5G) standards are in the process of becoming official in a couple of months. There are numerous use cases for various extreme requirements and large set of technologies developed by huge number of research communities. The workshop is being organized to give an overview of the various technology components of 5G standard specifications to meet the IMT-2020 requirements and new potential applications and use-cases. IMT-2020 Candidate Technologies were evaluated at ITU-R Working Party 5D against a set of technical performance requirements set forth by ITU-R in year 2017. The proponent technologies are in different stages of development and real world deployment. A number of use cases are defined and technologies being developed. The workshop provides the opportunity and brings all these people at this forum to discuss about it.

A couple of invited talks is arranged who are involved in technology development of IMT 2020. In the workshop, we also have few papers based on assessment of candidate technology submitted for evaluation.

Session Introduction

Dr. Navin Kumar, Workshop Co-Chair, Associate Professor, Amrita University, Bangalore-India

Title: IMT-2020 Channel Model for RIT Evaluation: Requirement, Principle and Advanced Features

Abstract: The workshop on “IMT 2020 Radio Interface Technology” is conceptualized as a result of participation in independent evaluation of IMT 2020 (5G) candidate technology. 5G India Forum (5GIF) registered as an independent evaluation group (IEG) for the IMT 2020 standard from ITU. A couple of educational institution and industry experts joined together to evaluate the submission of technology candidates such as ETSI DECT 2020, China, NuFront, 3GPP. On successful evaluation, the group planned to disseminate ate the information and process through conducting this workshop. We thank IEEE 5G World forum organizing committee for giving us chance to be here with you all. Apart from invited speakers, as you can see, they are highly involved in standard development, we also have few papers from evaluators who have presented their outcomes for some of the technology. I hope, the workshop and paper is very useful resource for many of you. Join and attend the workshop.

Title:Enabling Schemes for Pervasive Radio Interface Technologies (ESPRIT): Recent Progress Made under 5G and New Directions Paving the Way Towards 6G

Abstract: We review in this talk the wide plethora of new RIT features developed recently in the target context of 5G. We will focus particularly on the solutions proposed by the Wireless Lab that were deliberately sketched from inception to be pervasive in terms of flexibility, scalability, and integrative potential for new applications. We will then establish a quick overview of the progress made within IMT 2020 for adopting of the new 5G RIT enabling schemes made available lately. Finally, we will conclude this talk by identifying the opportunities arising in the near future for the evolution of IMT 2020 into advanced releases (5G+/B5G) and the new directions paving the way in the longer-term towards its transformation into 6G.

Title: Opportunities and challenges for AI in 5G and beyond

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries, products, and core capabilities by delivering dramatically enhanced experiences. Some good opportunities may lie ahead at all layers including the PHY, MAC, networking and overall system level optimizations. The field of AI, especially deep learning, is filled with tremendous opportunity for exploration and improvement. For instance, deep neural networks of today are rapidly growing in size and use too much memory, compute, and energy. To make AI truly ubiquitous, it needs to run on the end device within a tight power and thermal budget. New approaches and fundamental research in AI, as well as applying that research, is required to advance machine learning further and speed up adoption. In this topic we will discuss opportunities and challenges for AI in 5G and beyond.

Bio: Dr. Vinosh Babu James leads the technical standards engagement for Qualcomm in India. He engages Indian & regional stakeholders on matters related to radio standardization, harmonization and regulation. Vinosh joined Qualcomm in 2011, and has served in several roles spanning engineering and standardization. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the IIT Madras, with specialization in wireless communication. He has held several technical roles, including serving as the Chairman of the 5G working group in TSDSI. He is also a senior member of the IEEE.
