5G mobile communication systems provide strong Quality of Service (QoS), high capacity, and extremely low latency but traditional terrestrial networks can’t provide internet access to everyone especially on aircraft or trains, highways, and people in distant areas. Meanwhile, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), including satellite systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and High Altitude Platforms (HAPs) resolve the challenges of providing the connectivity. The interest in developing Non-GSO satellite systems is soaring and thousands of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems will create mega constellation to provide global communication services in the coming decade. Therefore, the role of Beyond 5G (B5G) and 6G systems, capable of implementing new technologies for mmWave frequency bands, space IoT, Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence paradigms, quantum satellite based security schemes should be investigated. The 6G systems are highly intelligent, scalable, reliable and able to support societal needs which can’t be fulfilled by 5G but, there are still areas that need to be explored by the industry and scientific community in developing the B5G and 6G satellite systems such as, architecture design, spectrum sharing, QoS/QoE, network virtualization, joint communication & sensing and resource optimization.
