5G Trends, Applications and Collaborations: Regional Visions, Verticals trials and pilots, and Inter-Regional Cooperation Activities
Governmental entities and several research bodies from different regions of the globe, are conducting studies and efforts in order to shape up 5G Evolution, accelerate its deployment, and test its potential performance in real world. In the ITU-R, the process of developing Recommendations for the terrestrial components of the IMT-2020 radio interface(s) has resulted in final IMT-2020 specifications end 2020. In the 3GPP, 5G functionalities have been issued in September 2018 (Release 15) and June 2020 (Release 16) with complete 5G features (eMBB, mMTC and uRRLC). Full 5G vision with Verticals functionalities are expected in June 2022 with Release 17, which will give 5G its full power and applications, whereas « 5G Advanced » will begin later with Release 18…Around 180 5G phase 1 networks (Rel. 15), including 15 Standalone networks, have been commercially launched worldwide. In this worldwide industry sessions, we invite leading 5G industry associations from different regions and countries to share and discuss their current activities, visions and future roadmaps towards Full 5G deployment, trials and pilots implementations and also to develop on international industry collaboration.
- Regional visions and involvement of verticals: While the 5G standards process assures ubiquity and interoperability, regional considerations may create different visions of 5G as operators analyze their spectrum portfolio, develop 5G trials, pilots, use cases with verticals, and other technological considerations surface.
- Spectrum, standardization and deployments roadmap towards Full 5G vision and 5G Advanced: What are the remaining target spectrum and candidate bands and when will it be decided? What is the image of 5G current deployments (Dense urban, Rural, Stadium…). What is the roadmap for 5G next deployments and how to make them successful? What is the involvement of verticals in 5G standardization and developments?

Ms. Wang Zhiqin, Chair IMT-2020 Promotion Group
Ms. Wang Zhiqin is the Vice President of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). She is the Chair of the Wireless Technical Committee of China Communications Standards Association (CCSA). She has long been dedicated to the in-depth studies on mobile communications technologies and standards, serving as Chair of the IMT-2020（5G）Promotion Group and Chair of the IMT-2030（6G）Promotion Group in China.
Yoshinori Ohmura, 5GMF, Japan
Mr. Yoshinori Ohmura joined KDD Co. Ltd. (currently KDDI Corporation) in 1981 and was engaged in the applied technology planning and standardization of network in ITU-T and APT etc. and
management of mobile phone joint venture in the overseas businesses and mobile application services. He is currently engaged in the promoting to realize the new generation mobile systems in ARIB (Association of Radio Industries and Businesses) from 2011. He also served as Deputy Secretary General of 5GMF (The 5th Generation Mobile Communications Promotion Forum) in Japan from 2015 and he is currently serving as Secretary General from 2019.
Pamela Kumar, Telecom Standards Development Society of India
Since February 2017, Ms. Pamela Kumar has been appointed as the Director General of TSDSI. An alumnus of PEC Chandigarh, Rutgers University and IIM Bangalore, Pamela brings with her an experience of 30+ years in the communications, computers and semiconductor industry.
TSDSI is involved in mobilising the Technical experts in the country to develop standards based on National Priorities & requirements and influencing Global Standards, particularly at ITU, 3GPP and other forums. Major contributions are being driven to incorporate India’s innovations to address Rural connectivity requirements for India and rest of the world. CCICI published a Framework & Roadmap for Cloud Computing Adoption in India and provided technical consultation on various aspects of the Cloud Computing Strategy for India. CCICI also formed the IoT for Smart Cities Task Force which published a series of reports related to Smart Cities Requirements Analysis, Smart Cities Reference Architecture, Smart Cities RFP Guidelines, Design & Planning of Smart Cities using IoT.
Prior to TSDSI, she spent the first 10 years of her career at AT&T, Bell Labs in USA and at C-DOT in Bangalore. Later, she held leadership positions in Texas Instruments, IBM, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, R&D labs in India. She also did a short stint with 2 startups, setting up the R&D centers of Network Programs and Alliance Semiconductors. She holds 3 Patents granted by USPTO and has 5 patent applications pending in the Networking Accelerators domain. She has been a Keynote/ invited speaker in 70+ Local and Global forums.
Pamela is also the Founding Chair and current President of Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India (CCICI). She is the Bharti Chair for IT Research at UIET, Panjab University. She also mentors a few Startups in the ICT space. She has been on the Governing Board of Indian Financial Technologies and Allied Services (IFTAS) and PEC University of Technology.
Pamela is Vice Chair of 3GPP-PCG and a member of the IEEE-SA nominations & Appointments Committee. She was the first ever appointee from India in the IEEE Standards Association – Board of Governors, as the Member at large for 2011-12. She has held several other leadership roles as a senior member of IEEE – such as Chair of the IEEE Charles Steinmetz Awards Committee, General Chair of IEEE ANTS Conference, Coordinator for IEEE Region 10 Industry Relations, Chair for IEEE Computer Society Chapter & Vice Chair of IEEE Bangalore section, etc.
Dong Ku Kim, 5G Forum Korea
DONG KU KIM received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1992. He worked on CDMA systems in the cellular infrastructure group of Motorola at Fort Worth, Texas. He has been a professor at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Yonsei University, since 1994. He was a founding chair of the 5G Forum in 2013 and had been engaging in it since then. 5G Forum is a think-tank for 5G Globalization, 5G commercialization, SME promotion, 5G vertical trial and promotion, and future technologies. He is a chair of the executive committee of the 5G Forum. He is also a member of the 5G+ strategy committee, which is chaired by the minister of MIST. He is a senior member of IEEE. He received the Order of Service Merit (medal of honor) from the Korean government for the contribution of the world’s first commercialization of 5G, ecosystem creation, and the spread of convergence among 5G-based industries in 2020. He also received the Award of Excellence in the leadership of 100 Leading Technologies for Korea 2020 from the National Academy of Engineering of Korea. He is also a recipient of Dr. Irwin Jacobs Academic Achievement Award in 2016 from Qualcomm. His current research interests are 5G mobile communication system, full-duplex MIMO in vehicular use cases, tactile internet, and 5G-V2X technologies using lens-based MIMO.
Colin Willcock, Chairman, Board of the 5G Infrastructure Association.
Colin Willcock graduated from the University of Sheffield, UK, with a B.Sc in Physics in 1986, an MSc. In Astronomical Technology from the University of Edinburgh in 1987 and a PhD in Parallel Computation from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1992. Dr. Willcock joined Nokia in 1999, and is currently Head of Radio Network Standardization. He has participated extensively in standardization activities at ETSI, ITU-T and 3GPP, and also has extensive experience of European research having led a number of European projects.
José Marcos C. Brito, Inatel
José Marcos C. Brito received the B. S. degree in electronic and telecommunications engineering from National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), Brasil, in 1986 and the M. Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Campinas University (Unicamp), Brasil, in 1998 and 2003, respectively, both in electrical engineering.
He has worked as a professor at Inatel since 1986, since 1990 as a full professor. He has occupied several management positions at Inatel: General Manager of Research & Development Center, Post-Graduation Coordinator, Research & Post-Graduation Director, and General Vice-Director.
Currently, he is the Research & Post-Graduation Director at Inatel, the General Coordinator of Radiocommunication Reference Center at Inatel, the Secretary General of 5G Brazil Project at Telebrasil, the Coordinator of the courses Master’s and Doctorate in Telecommunications at Inatel, and the General Coordinator of Brazil 6G Project .
His research & development interests include 5G and 6G networks, telecommunications systems, digital communications, and performance analysis of telecommunications networks.
Chris Pearson, President, 5G Americas
Chris Pearson is the President of 5G Americas. In his executive role, he is responsible for the overall planning of the organization and providing management for the integration of strategy and operations in the areas of technology, marketing, public relations and regulatory affairs. As President of 5G Americas (formerly called 4G Americas), Mr. Pearson represents the organization’s Market Representation Partner interests within the 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) organization.
Mr. Pearson led the organization from its inception in 2001 as the 3GPP family of technologies market share grew from 10 percent in 2001 to more than 93 percent in North, Central and South America. Mr. Pearson came to the organization from the Universal Wireless Communications Consortium (UWCC) where he served as Executive Vice President in charge of the strategic executive management of the global TDMA wireless technology consortium. Prior to joining the UWCC, Mr. Pearson held several senior technical and marketing positions at AT&T Wireless and GTE.
With more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, Mr. Pearson is a recognized spokesperson in mobile wireless and 5G technology trends and has spoken at technology conferences throughout the world including CES, Mobile World Congress, CTIA Super Mobility, LTE World, 5G World North America, and 5G Forum USA.
Mr. Pearson earned a Master of Business Administration degree from The Albers School of Business and Economics at Seattle University and a Bachelor of Arts degree with emphasis in Marketing and Finance from the University of Washington.
Mitch Tseng, Next Generation Communication Technology Office, ITRI
Dr. Mitch Tseng is a well-known veteran in the international standards community for communications. He had been leading the development of various telecommunication standards in TIA, 3GPP2, 3GPP, and helped established oneM2M prior to joining the Industry Internet Consortium (IIC). His latest passion is to promote technologies such as Edge Computing, Digital Twin, AR/XR and AI for Industrial IoT (IIoT) Services. He is currently the Co-Chair of both the Innovation and Marketing Working Group and the Edge Computing Task Group in IIC. Furthermore, “Dr. Incredible”, Mitch’s alias known by fellow contributors in IIC, has been seen in action in many IIC activities.
In addition to the IIC work, Mitch joined the latest Next G Alliance in US and is serving as a Vice-Chair of the Applications Working Group focusing on identifying uses cases and the associated technologies for the future communication systems. He is also serving as the Rapporteur of ISO TC204 WG16 (ITS Communication Protocols).
As a self-appointed IIoT Evangelist, Dr. Tseng has been visiting many IIoT end-users in different trades so as to listen and learn the “Do’s and Don’ts” from them. Based on the insights he gathered, he helps the clients to refine the system designs and connect partners to help build their IIoT services. With all the meetings among interested parties in Asia, Europe, and Americas, Mitch’s next milestone, literally, is to become a Four-Million-Miller of American Airline’s Advantage Program.
Bernard Barani, European Commisson- DG CONNECT
Bernard Barani joined the European Commission in 1994 after 11 years as Communication engineer in industry on military optical systems and then with the European Space Agency on advanced satcom programmes. Since 1994, he has been responsible for the strategy and the implementation of European research and policy issues in wireless communication, audio visual systems, RFID, Internet of Things and networked enterprise systems. He is currently Deputy head of unit in the CONNECT Directorate General of the European Commission where he leads the definition and implementation of the 5G Public Private Partnership launched in 2013, the industrial EC initiative to support 5G European R&D and deployment. Main
field of activities covers strategic R&D planning and implementation including future beyond 5G systems, standardisation, international cooperation, demonstration and pilot programmes, and the implementation of the 5G Action Plan launched in 2016 to support early 5G deployment in Europe. He also has a lead role to define the future
Public Private Partnership on Smart Networks and Services (6G) targeted for implementation under the Horizon Europe programme in the 2021-2027 time frame.
He is also vice chairman of the Steering committee of the EUCNC conference, the main showcasing event for telecom research sponsored by the EU programmes. He has an engineering degree from the “Ecole National Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne”.
Ashutosh Dutta, Johns Hopkins University
Ashutosh Dutta is currently a senior scientist and 5G Chief Strategist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). He is also a JHU/APL Sabbatical Fellow and adjunct faculty at The Johns Hopkins University. His career, spanning more than 30 years, includes Director of Technology Security and Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T, CTO of Wireless for NIKSUN, Inc., Senior Scientist and Project Manager in Telcordia Research, Director of the Central Research Facility at Columbia University, adjunct faculty at NJIT, and Computer Engineer with TATA Motors. He has more than 90 conference and journal publications, three book chapters, and 31 issued patents. Ashutosh served as the Director of Industry Outreach for IEEE Communications Society from 2014-2019. Ashutosh has been serving as the founding Co-Chair for IEEE Future Network Initiative. Ashutosh currently serves as IEEE Communications Society’s Distinguished Lecturer and Member-At-Large. Ashutosh obtained his BS in Electrical Engineering from NIT Rourkela, India; MS in Computer Science from NJIT; and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York under the supervision of Prof. Henning Schulzrinne. Ashutosh is a Fellow of IEEE and senior member of ACM.
Chen Tao, Project Manager, 5G-DRIVE
Dr. Tao Chen is a research team leader at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, an honorary professor at University of Kent, UK, and an adjunct professor at University of Jyväskylä, Finland. He has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications sector, and long experience in coordinating large R&D projects. He was the coordinator of 5G PPP COHERENT project and the technical manager of H2020 5G-DRIVE project. Dr. Chen was the founder and editor-in-chief of EAI Transactions on Cognitive Communications, technical editor of IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine, and IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Communications and Networking. He has published more than 70 scientific publications.
Andreas Mueller, Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany
Dr. Andreas Mueller is the Head of Communication and Network Technology in the Corporate Research Department of Robert Bosch GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany and at the same time the Bosch Chief Expert for Communication Technologies for the IoT. In addition to that, he is coordinating the Industrial 5G activities of Bosch across the different business units and plants. He also serves as General Chair of the “5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation” (5G-ACIA), the globally leading initiative for driving and shaping Industrial 5G.
Maxime Flament, 5GAA
Dr. Flament represents 5GAA, the global cross-industry association for the development of connected and automated cars, where he works as Chief Technology Officer since April 2018. Maxime was working previously as Head of Department for Connected & Automated Driving (CAD) at ERTICO – ITS Europe. Maxime holds a PhD and MSc from Chalmers Technical University, Sweden and an “Ingénieur Civil” degree from the Free University of Brussels. He also was visiting researcher at Stanford University, CA, USA.
Heinz Bernold, Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
Heinz Bernold is a Partner & Director at Boston Consulting Group (BCG). He is a core member of BCG’s Technology, Media and Telecommunication practice area and advises telecommunications and technology firms on digital infrastructure and digital business strategy. Heinz has over twenty years of combined industry and management consulting experience in technology, media, and telecommunications. Before re-joining BCG, Heinz worked at Swisscom as Head of Strategy & Innovation, responsible for Network, IT & Wholesale business.
Wanshi Chen, Chairman TSG RAN, 3GPP
Wanshi Chen is currently 3GPP TSG RAN Plenary Chair appointed in April 2021. From August 2017 to May 2021, he was 3GPP TSG RAN1 Chair, where under this position, he has successfully managed and led successful delivery of the first and the second 5G New Radio (NR) releases. He was a RAN1 vice chair from August 2013 to August 2017. Wanshi has over 20 years of experiences in telecommunications in leading telecom companies including operators, infrastructure vendors, and chipset vendors. He has been with Qualcomm since 2006. The highest degree that Wanshi has received is a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA. Wanshi is an avid Marathon runner with a personal best time of 2 hours and 54 minutes.
Dr. Chih-Lin I, China Mobile Chief Scientist, Wireless Technologies, China Mobile Research Institute
Chih-Lin I is CMCC Chief Scientist of Wireless Technologies. She received Ph.D. EE from Stanford University. She has won 2005 IEEE ComSoc Stephen Rice Prize, 2018 IEEE ComSoc Fred W. Ellersick Prize, the 7th IEEE Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award, and 2015 IEEE Industrial Innovation Award for Leadership and Innovation in Next-Generation Cellular Wireless Networks.
She is the Chair of O-RAN Technical Steering Committee and an O-RAN Executive Committee Member, the Chair of FuTURE 5G/6G SIG, the Chair of WAIA (Wireless AI Alliance) Executive Committee, an Executive Board Member of GreenTouch, a Network Operator Council Founding Member of ETSI NFV, a Steering Board Member and Vice Chair of WWRF, a Steering Committee member and the Publication Chair of IEEE 5G and Future Networks Initiatives, the Founding Chair of IEEE WCNC Steering Committee, the Director of IEEE ComSoc Meetings and Conferences Board, a Senior Editor of IEEE Trans. Green Comm. & Networking, an Area Editor of ACM/IEEE Trans. Networking; Executive Co-chair of IEEE Globecom 2020, IEEE WCNC 2007, IEEE WOCC 2004 and 2000; a member of IEEE ComSoc SDB, SPC, and CSCN-SC, and a Scientific Advisory Board Member of Singapore NRF.
She has published over 200 papers in scientific journals, book chapters and conferences and holds over 100 patents. She is co-author of the book “Green and Software-defined Wireless Networks — From Theory to Practice” and has also Co-edited two books: “Ultra-dense Networks — Principles and Applications” and “5G Networks — Fundamental Requirements, Enabling Technologies, and Operations Management”. She is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of WWRF. Her current research interests center around ICDT Deep Convergence: “From Green & Soft to Open & Smart”.
Jean-Pierre Bienaimé, Chairman, Ubiquity Consulting
Jean-Pierre Bienaimé has been Chairman of Ubiquity Consulting, with consulting activities in the field of 5G, telecommunications and international relations, since 2016. He has also been Senior Advisor International Relations at Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) since May 2020. He has been Secretary General of the 5G Infrastructure Association (5G-IA), representing the digital & telecommunications industry (operators, manufacturers, research and academic institutes, verticals, SMEs) in the Public-Private Partnership (5G PPP) with the European Commission, from 2016 until 2019. He has also been Chairman of the 5G PPP Steering Board. Jean-Pierre has been Chairman of IREST (Economic and Social Research Institute on Telecommunications), a think tank of influence based in Paris, from 2015 until 2020. Jean-Pierre has been Chairman of mobile industry association The UMTS Forum from 2003 until 2015, with a mission to promote a common vision of the development of 3G UMTS and 4G LTE and evolutions, and to ensure their worldwide commercial success.
Joining France Telecom (FT) in 1979, Bienaimé has had responsibilities including Director Planning Department at FT, Advisor to the Director General of Moroccan Telecommunications in Rabat, Director of Marketing and Product Development for International Networks & Services at FT, Chief Executive Officer of Nexus International, and Vice-President Group Mobile Support at Orange. From 2010 until 2016, Jean-Pierre has been Senior Vice-President at Orange Wholesale.
