Dr. Carolyn C. Matheus is a Professor of Information Systems, co-chair of the strategic plan implementation committee, co-chair for AI in academics, and sits on the AI steering committee at Marist College. She is a member of the IEEE standard for ethical considerations in emulated empathy in autonomous and intelligent systems (affective computing/emotion AI). She previously served as Interim Dean for the School of Computer Science and Mathematics and Director of the Honors Program. She holds a PhD in Organizational Studies/Information Science with a concentration in leadership from the State University of New York at Albany and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology.
With a deep passion for education, extensive experience in academic leadership, and a commitment to fostering DEI initiatives, she has a demonstrated track record advocating for faculty, supporting high impact practices for students, and driving the internationalization of programming. She is passionate about advancing academic programs and strategic initiatives across operating areas, has established valuable industry and community partnerships, and leads efforts that highlight interdisciplinary synergies and drive innovation in higher education.
She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in AI Literacy, technology ethics, systems analysis and design, information quality, data analytics, and leadership. She serves as an internship coordinator for technology majors, helping students build portfolios and fostering relationships with alumni and companies to facilitate internships and jobs for students. She regularly leads student research projects focusing on interdisciplinary applications of technology and ethics.
She offers seminars on leadership and innovation for the National Society of Leadership and Success and developed and led an annual community-based global learning program in which
Computer Science and Spanish students collaborated to host a technology education summer camp for junior high students in the Dominican Republic. Dr. Matheus has led and served on numerous committees including Rank and Tenure, Academic Affairs, Early College High School Program (Steering Committee), Honors Council (Chair), School DEI committee (leader), Middle States (Steering Committee), Strategic Plan Projects Advisory Committee (Chair), Strategic Plan, Library Development (Chair), Internship Task Force, Common Reading Committee, Undergraduate Research Task Force, and the Core L/S Committee.
