Seeds of Success: Empowering Latina STEM Girl Ambassadors Through Role Models

Abstract

Science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) degrees provide access to rewarding, highly remunerated careers, and the opportunity to contribute solutions to society’s problems. Unfortunately, Latinas and African American women comprise less than 4% of the current STEM workforce. Gender stereotypes and a lack of relatable role models, mentors, and early exposure to STEM have been suggested to deter middle school girls away from STEM interests  .

Breaking Barriers for Women in STEM

Abstract

Throughout history we have had great female figures who have left an important legacy in STEM fields. Unfortunately, these cases are not the ones commonly highlighted in our textbooks or classrooms. Frequently, when our girls are exposed to these kind of professionals, it turns out to be a masculine figure. Young women are growing up without being represented in engineering, technology, math and science fields, which can lead them to think that the careers suited for them are anything but those. We have to develop strategies and opportunities to change that reality. We are all responsible for eliminating the taboos that society itself has established from ancient times; those that today, affect the mentality of many parents and adults of our generation and that, consequently, affect the way our young people think. We can start by empowering young women to choose these careers, to educate our society, to achieve the respect they deserve, and to strive for more diverse and healthier work environments in the immediate future.
