Professor Ir. Dr Nasrudin Bin Abd Rahim

A New Era of Power Electronics in Malaysia: Research Challenges

Biography:

Professor Ir. Dr Nasrudin Bin Abd Rahim, a Malaysian aged 62. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the University of Strathclyde in 1985 and obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering from the same university in 1988. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree with a thesis titled “Closed-Loop Control of a Current-Mode AC/DC Buck Converter in a 4 Quadrant P-Q Operation” in the field study of Power Electronics from Heriot-Watt University, which he obtained in 1995.

He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers USA since 2008, a Professional Engineer of the Board of Engineers Malaysia since 2017, a Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Engineering Council (United Kingdom) since 2001, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (United Kingdom) since 2009 and a Fellow of the Academy of Science Malaysia since 2010.

He started his career as a lecturer in 1996 with the University of Malaya (“UM”) in Power Electronics, where he remained until his retirement in 2020 and joined back as a Senior Contractual Professor. During his tenure with UM, he has held various positions, namely Senior Professor and Director and Founder of Higher Institution Centre of Excellence for UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (“UMPEDAC”).

He specializes in power electronics & drives, renewable energy systems and policy, and energy efficiency systems. Professor Dr Nasrudin has produced 52 PhD students and 55 Master by research. In addition, he has contributed to various applied engineering fields by providing consultancies, conducting professional testing services to PV solar farms and offering specialized research facilities in solar inverter and solar PV modules. He has published more than 350 high impact journals, 150 conference papers, four (4) books and six (6) book chapters. He was granted five (5) patents and sixteen (16) pending.
