Hybrid AC/DC Microgrids: Configuration, Control and Future Development

Biography:

Kai Sun (M’12-SM’16) is an accomplished electrical engineer and researcher known for his contributions to the field of power electronics and renewable generation systems. He received his B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University in 2000, 2002, and 2006, respectively. Since 2006, he has been a Tenured Associate Professor (Research Professor) in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sun has been actively involved in international academic collaborations. He served as a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark, from September 2009 to August 2010. Additionally, from January to August 2017, he was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada.

Dr. Sun’s research interests revolve around power electronics for renewable generation systems, microgrids, and the energy internet. Specifically, he focuses on high-performance converters for hybrid AC/DC microgrids, power quality, and distributed power generation systems. His work has been published in prestigious journals and conferences, and he has contributed as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, and Journal of Power Electronics.

Recognized for his expertise, Dr. Sun has taken on various leadership roles in the academic community. He served as the TPC Vice Chair of IEEE ECCE2017 and IEEE ECCE-Asia2017, the Organization Committee Chair of IEEE eGrid2019, and the Publicity Chair of IEEE ECCE2020. Moreover, he served as the General Co-Chair of the 2018 International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC2018).

Dr. Sun’s contributions to the field have earned him prestigious awards and recognition. He received the Delta Young Scholar Award in 2013, the Youth Award of China Power Supply Society (CPSS) in 2017, and the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics’ Outstanding Reviewers Award in 2019. In recognition of his expertise and influential research, Dr. Sun was selected as an IEEE PELS Distinguished Lecturer for the term 2021-2024.

Currently, Dr. Sun holds positions of leadership within the Power Electronics Society (PELS) as the PELS Asia Pacific Regional Vice Chair, PELS Beijing Chapter Chair, and PELS Electronic Power Grid Systems Technical Committee (TC8) Secretary. With his extensive knowledge and experience, Dr. Kai Sun continues to make significant contributions to the field of power electronics, furthering advancements in renewable generation systems and energy technology.
