We invite all undergraduate students working on or interested in social implications of technology to submit an abstract for presentation at the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS 2024), to be held as a hybrid event in Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP), Puebla, Mexico on 18 – 20, September 2024. There will be no registration fee for presenters to attend the student event.
Each abstract will go through the review process to assess quality, level of the work, relevance, and methodological vigor. There will be an option to present remotely if you are unable to travel to Mexico. Presenters will have an opportunity to meet, discuss, and network with researchers and educators from academia and industry. The event will provide an environment in which students already working and students new to the field can ask questions and share lessons learned. Remote presenters need to send a video recording of the 10-minutes presentation. This video will be use if an internet problem occurs in remote presentation.
Students working and/or interested in the social implication on Technology area including but not limited to Social Implication of Artificial Intelligence, Climate change, Ethics and human values, Health & safety technology systems and Sustainable technology are encouraged to submit an abstract.
Topics of Interest:
Presentations that relate to any aspect of “the social implications of technology,” broadly conceived, are welcome. This includes the full set of “Topics of Interest” listed on the ISTAS 2024 CFP, especially:
- The social implications of artificial intelligence
- Technology, ethics, and human values
- Technology and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues
- Technology-focused law, policy, regulation, and guidelines
- Technology, sustainability, and Environment.
- Technology systems related to health(care) and safety
- Universal access to technology
- Privacy and security

Eligibility Requirements:
- Students from all disciplines are invited to participate.
- At the time of the conference, presenters must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students.
- Both individual and team submissions are welcome. Team submissions should note the presenter and a primary contact.
Submission Guidelines:
Students might propose a presentation in which they share their thinking about the social implications of specific technological design projects they have undertaken as part of their studies. They also might propose a presentation that explores the social implications of a specific technological tool, platform, or device they interact with in their daily lives, or of a broader socio-technical system that plays a significant role in today’s world. Historical case studies as well as future-oriented speculative projects are equally welcome to presentations that focus on present-day contexts.
Scope, Length, Format:
- Abstracts should be 250-350 words in length (excluding references), and they should:
- Identify a clear and focused central topic that will be the subject of the presentation;
- Outline a logical structure of ideas/argument/key takeaways that the presentation will include;
- Incorporate reference to relevant research/contexts as needed.
- Submissions must also include:
- A descriptive title of the presentation;
- The author(s)’s full name(s) and email address(es);
- The name of the university, program, and year of study in which the presenter(s) is (are) enrolled.
- Abstracts must be submitted through the ISTAS 2024 Submission Portal as PDFs
- Note for remote presenters: you will be required to submit a recorded version of your presentation by Wednesday September 11, 2024, which will be used in the case of connectivity issues during the event.
