All of these activities will take place on Friday night at or near the conference room of the SpringHill Suites Hotel. 

Fireside Chat w/ Alumni

Visiting company representatives from American Tower, Intelligent Product Solutions (IPS)North Atlantic Industries (NAI), and Zebra Technologies will speak about their industry experience and career growth, and answer any burning questions related to their industry. Attendees must submit their questions through the registration form in advance by Monday, March 31st if you would like your question to be addressed during the panel. Due to the size of the event venue, there will be limited seats for this panel.

Micromouse and Sumo Bot Practice Runs

Students will be able to utilize a scaled down Micromouse Maze and the Sumo Bot platform in order to test out their robots before the competition.

Challenges & Opportunities in Sustainable Energy

Dr. Jessica Bian holds a lot of industry experience, serving as the current Vice President of Grid Services at Grid-X Partners and the former President of IEEE Power & Energy Society (2022-2023). Through her time in the workforce, she has become a recognized pioneer and trusted world leader in her field, establishing a total of 18 industry-wide reliability indicators to determine grid reliability, adequacy, and associated risks. Join Dr. Jessica Bian for her lecture on the Challenges & Opportunities in Sustainable Energy, where she will explore renewable energy integration, grid resilience, and emerging technologies.

Amateur Radio Lecture‎‎ ‎

Amateur Radio, which is often referred to as Ham Radio, is a valuable tool for technical students as puts theory to practice. It is a popular hobby explored by many people across the globe, while also being a vital communication service. Come join George Sullivan, the Vice-President of the Long Island Mobile Amateur Radio Club (LIMARC), for this event where he will teach participants the scope and purpose of using communication technologies through radio frequencies, explore the advancements of analog and digital communications technology, and discuss the opportunities for local amateur radio activities on Long Island, NY.

MangDang Workshop ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎ ‎‎‎‎‎ ‎‎ ‎‎ ‎

MangDang is a Kickstarter company partnered with IEEE and other large organizations, that develops and manufactures Mini Puppers kits. Their Mini Puppers are an open-source quadruped robot designed for education, research, and hobbyist projects. These robots integrate computer vision, AI, and autonomous navigation, making them an ideal tool for learning robotics and embedded systems. Attend this workshop to learn more about the functions and features of these Mini Puppers!

Lecture of Intellectual Property and Patents

John Vodopia has been a US Patent Attorney since 1992, and served as the Chair of the Long Island Section Chapter of IEEE Committee for Legal Affairs for the term 2020-2021. His lecture will cover valuable information on the purpose and importance of Intellectual Property and Patents, backed by his extensive and successful career within the industry. Along with the lecture, he will also demonstrate how to prepare a provisional application for the US patent office’s through the “first-to-file” system, and showcase examples of how innovators in some of the most popular and advanced technological fields have protected their intellectual property.

Young Professionals & Machine Learning Lecture

Samuel Stone is an AI/ML Engineer at Lockheed Martin, and also serves as the IEEE Region 1 Young Professional Chair. For this lecture, Sam will discuss the mission and influence of the IEEE Young Professionals Organization, and present opportunities for funding to support Student Activities. Sam will also provide an in-depth look at Large Language Model development and training through real-world examples.

Soon Wan, the Student Activities and Membership Development Chair of IEEE Region 1, is a a Principle Design Engineer with over 20 years of experience. Come join him for an informative and fascinating lecture on the intricacies of drone mechanics and piloting, including the physics behind drone and aircraft flight, aviation regulations, and drone communication. Stay for the exciting and unique opportunity to assemble, test, then modify a drone at the end of the workshop!
