Robert C. Fry, Jr., PhD 

Robert Fry is Chief Economist of Robert Fry Economics LLC, where he analyzes and forecasts the global economy to guide business decision-makers.  Robert publishes a monthly newsletter, Current Economic Conditions, and speaks on the economic outlook to corporate leadership teams, customer/supplier events, and trade association meetings. 

   
Until retiring in 2015, Robert was Senior Economist at DuPont, where he analyzed the global economy and its impact on DuPont, published a monthly newsletter sent to thousands of DuPont employees and customers, and made more than 800 speeches on the economic outlook to DuPont senior management, business teams, customers, and trade associations. 

While at DuPont, Robert and his colleague Bob Shrouds were named among the top economic forecasters by Bloomberg, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal.  In 2005, they won the prestigious Lawrence R. Klein Award for Blue Chip Forecasting Accuracy, making the DuPont Economist’s Office the first three-time winner of the award. 

Robert is currently a member of the Consensus Economics, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and National Association for Business Economics survey panels.

François Brassard 

Vice President – Integrated Energy System Design and Technology Projects 

Hydro-Québec 

A passionate and committed engineer, François Brassard has more than 30 years of experience in electrical engineering, both in medium and high voltage and in instrumentation and control. Mr. Brassard began his career with Hydro-Québec as a test engineer in the high-voltage laboratory of Hydro-Québec’s research center, before specializing in metering, distribution and transmission network. He also has over 20 years of experience in technical team management in the fields of engineering and network operations in distribution, transmission and generation system. 

As Vice President — Integrated Energy System Design and Technology Projects, Mr. Brassard is responsible for establishing and developing the architecture and design of the energy system, from generation to distribution. As such, he oversees technological projects that contribute to the operation and evolution of the grid. 

Mr. Brassard has served over the past few years on several committees such as the Reliability Coordinating Committee of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC), the Membership Representatives Committee of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) as well as that of Electricity Canada. His expertise extends beyond our borders, as he has participated in various committees and international projects on behalf of Hydro-Québec. 

Hydro-Québec is the Canada’s largest electricity producer and one of the world’s largest hydropower producers. 

Hydro-Québec’s generating fleet comprises 61 hydroelectric generating stations and 24 thermal plants with a total installed capacity of 37.2 GW. Its hydropower facilities also include 28 large reservoirs with a combined storage capacity of over 176 TWh, as well as 681 dams and 91 control structures. 

Built in 1910 on the Rivière Saint-Maurice falls, Shawinigan-2 is the oldest operating generating station. For a long time, it was the most powerful hydropower generating station in North America. Given its advanced age, Shawinigan-2 still impress with his beauty and original equipment. It runs eight generating units, some of which still have a horizontal axis! 

Be sure to take the elevator to the top of the lookout tower, an old 115metre tower that’s as tall as a 38story building. The view is breathtaking!

Flat and closed shoes are recommended. As part of the visit takes place outdoors, remember to dress accordingly. 

The visit is partially accessible to people with reduced mobility. 

As a precaution, people wearing a pacemaker cannot participate in the part of the visit that takes place in the power plant. 

IEEE DEIS 2023 Electrical Insulation Conference

EIC 2023 will be held at the Quebec City Convention Center between June 18 – 22nd, 2023.  The convention center is only a short walk to the European Style Old Walled City.  There is no end to tourism attractions from the charm of the Historic District of Old Quebec City, the Petit Champlain pedestrian shopping district, Hotel Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, or the Basilica Cathedral Notre-Dame de Quebec.  Quebec City is one of the safest cities in the world.  If your spouse wants to do some sightseeing or shopping while you are at the conference you can be assured by the fact that the city is considered extremely safe, walking alone either day or night.  Finally, you will find an endless supply of great restaurants, local shops, art galleries, museums, and bistros.

During the conference you will have the opportunity to tour Hydro-Quebec Power Plant Shawingan-2 on Sunday afternoon June 18th.

Exhibits and technical papers include the latest development of electrical insulation materials, condition assessment and diagnostics, instrumentation, transformers, switchgear, outdoor insulation, cable diagnostics, nano-dielectrics, testing technologies, and others. The pre-conference event features short courses from well-known technical experts in areas of partial discharge, transformers, cable, and rotating machinery.

Immediately after the Conference, a series of IEEE working group meetings will be held for discussions related to new IEEE standards and revisions to existing standards related to insulating materials. As usual, IEEE working group meetings are open to all interested guest participants.

Several important dates for EIC participants. The deadline for conference abstracts is October 15, 2022. The date of provisional acceptance notification of abstracts is November 30, 2022. The deadline for full papers for peer review is January  31, 2023. Authors’ registration and full payment are required before March 1, 2023.

Papers approved and presented during the conference event will be published in the conference proceedings and will become accessible to other readers via IEEEXplore.
