This course will provide basic description of stator insulation components and systems. It will include an overview of technical principles, applications and testing requirements outlined in IEEE 56, IEEE Guide for Insulation Maintenance of Electric Machines, along with some points from IEEE 4, 43, 95, and 286.

  • Who should attend:
    • Engineers who require testing and inspection of electric machines especially turbo generators
    • Maintenance, Service and Technical staff responsible for electrical machinery
    • Management of any level
  • Key Benefits:
    • Provide a basic description of stator insulating components and insulation systems
    • Describe the types of tests for machine insulation
    • Additional investigative tools such as: microscope, borescope and other visual and investigative methods

    • Review of typical parameters and example results
    • Provide pros and cons of various tests

Grid Stability and Energy Mix Transition Through Pumped Storage Power Plants

Sunday Morning-1/2 day course

Dr. Klaus Krueger holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. His career started in ABB’s thermal power plant automation division in Mannheim.

In 2004, Dr. Krueger joined Voith Hydro in Heidenheim, Dr. Krueger is a Senior Expert for Plant Safety & Energy Storage Solutions at Voith Hydro.

His contribution to developing new technology and his passion for the pumped hydroelectric storage made him an international expert on this topic. His latest contribution was editing a book chapter in “Pumped Hydroelectric Storage”, which has been published in 2020

Abstract:

This technical seminar is an introductory course to the important role that Pump Hydro Storage Plants serve in increasing grid stability of interconnected power systems using power from a mix of energy sources. The topics include the technical and economic advantages of Pump Hydro Storage Plants. The course will review the design criteria, boundary condition, typical unit arrangements, and special operation modes. This course will analyze case studies in execution of pumped storage plants and current economic problems of PSP.

Abstract:

This short course will provide an overview of some of the most important types of insulation used in electrical and transformer machines. Typical applications in machines of the insulation will be discussed as well. The types of insulation discussed would include:

  • Resins and Varnishes
  • Flexible Insulations (papers, films and laminates including mica for high voltage)
  • Thermoset Laminate Solid Composite Insulations
  • Pressure Sensitive Tapes

This course will be of interest to anyone responsible for or wanting to know more about available insulation materials for electrical equipment. It would be of particular benefit to those responsible for the selection of insulation (dielectric) materials, including design engineers and quality personnel. Students and young engineers will also benefit from this thorough introduction to insulating materials for various types of electrical equipment.

This course is a great way to connect with knowledgeable people in the industry! Useful for those new to the industry as well as those that have an interest in exploring dielectric material options for their insulation needs.
