Abstract – Power Electronics for Smart Utility Interface and Energy Storage Systems

A wide variety of utility connected DC grids are becoming more accepted in clean energy systems and introducing new demands for the power converter technology being used. New devices such as SiC and GAN are pushing the envelope when it comes to high efficient more compact power converters. A variety of new technologies will be described that take advantage of recent technology advances. Coupled inductor and transformer systems will be described that lower the size of ac and dc filters. Concepts such as flux cancelling, differential and common-mode magnetics, illustrate how higher performance power conversion systems can be obtained in applications such as high speed machines and battery energy storage. Finally, the benefits of adopting open winding and high speed machines in clean energy systems will be described.
