TUTORIALS AND COURSE PROVIDERS

Professor Pierluigi Mancarella, University of Melbourne, Australia

Pierluigi Mancarella is Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Professor of Smart Energy Systems at the University of Manchester, UK. His key research interests include techno-economic modelling and analysis of multi-energy systems, grid integration of renewables and distributed energy resources, energy infrastructure planning under uncertainty, and security, reliability, and resilience of low-carbon networks.

Pierluigi is the Energy Systems Program Leader at the Melbourne Energy Institute, an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Power and Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer, the Convenor of the CIGRE (International Council of Large Electric Systems) C6/C2.34 Working Group on Flexibility Provision from Distributed Energy Resources, holds the 2017 veski innovation fellowship for his work on urban-scale virtual power plants, and is a recipient of the international Newton Prize 2018 for his work on power system resilience in Chile. He is author of several books and over 300 research papers and reports, and is a journal editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and Oxford Open Energy.

In the past few years, Pierluigi has supported the Finkel Review panel, the Australian Energy Market Operator, the Australian Energy Market Commission, and the Australian Energy Regulator on relevant research and consultancy projects on power system security, reliability, and resilience, and has led and been involved in several projects via the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and Cooperative Research Centres.

A/Prof. Lasantha Meegahapola, RMIT University, Australia

A/Prof. Lasantha Meegahapola received the Ph.D. degree from the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK in 2010. Dr. Meegahapola has over 17 years’ research experience in power system dynamics and stability with renewable power generation and has published more than 150 journal and conference articles. He has also conducted research studies on microgrid dynamics & stability and coordinated reactive power dispatch during steady-state and dynamic/transient conditions for networks with high wind penetration. He is currently employed as an Associate Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society (PES), IEEE Industrial Applications Society and IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES).

He also an active member of the IEEE PES power system dynamic performance (PSDP) committee task force on microgrid stability analysis and modelling and working group on voltage stability. Dr. Meegahapola is also serving as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and IEEE PES Letters.

A/Prof. Lasantha Meegahapola will provide the tutorial titled ‘Frequency and Voltage Control in Renewable-Rich Power Grids’

Dr. Sleiman Mhanna , Senior Research Fellow, The University of Melbourne

Dr. Sleiman Mhanna received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Sydney in 2016 and is now a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne working on designing mathematical models and scalable algorithms for the operation and planning of integrated electricity, gas, and hydrogen systems. The studies he has conducted over the past three years, which include electrification of residential heating demand and modelling of hydrogen blending in gas transmission networks, are currently used by Future Fuels Cooperative Research Centre (FF CRC) and its industry partners in their policy initiatives and decarbonisation roadmaps. He is also a senior member at IEEE and an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid and for IEEE Power Engineering Letters.

Dr. Julius Susanto, Australian Energy Market Commission, Australia

Dr. Julius Susanto (SMIEEE, MIEAust) is a Chartered electrical engineer with over 20 years of industry experience across most of the electricity supply chain, including working with the Australian Energy Market Commission, the Australian Energy Market Operator, Transgrid, DIgSILENT and Worley. He has postgraduate qualifications in electrical power engineering (PhD) and economics (Grad Dip).

Dr. Julius Susanto will be coordinating with A/Prof. Lasantha Meegahapola to provide tutorial on the topic titled ‘Frequency and Voltage Control in Renewable-Rich Power Grids‘.
