Panel: The Future of Modern Imaging

The panel features industrial experts in various aspects of imaging. Panelists represent companies having based their research arms in Tampere, the city cast as ‘Silicon Valley of Imaging’.

The panelists will discuss topics around mobile and immersive imaging, building situational awareness and what image quality means for distinctive groups of users. They will be keen to get questions from the audience and eventually sketch what is the next big thing in imaging and how to research it.

The panel will be held on Tuesday, 22 September, 2020 at 3:10pm-4:10pm (EEST), and it will be streamed from a virtual studio! Registered users can follow the panel here and join the conversation in Zoom. The link will become active 15 minutes prior to live session. Juha Alakarhu

Juha Alakarhu is the VP of Imaging at Axon. He runs the Axon R&D office in Finland and is responsible for the imaging system for Axon camera products. Juha’s entiere professional career has been in camera development. Before joining Axon in 2018, he worked in Nokia and Microsoft, and has participated in development of several pioneering camera solutions, such as oversampling, optical image stabilizer, new type of image processing, and virtual reality. Juha is also a board memeber of Polight. Juha holds a PhD from Tampere University of Technology.

Dr. Jarno Nikkanen received the M.Sc. and Dr.Sc.Tech. degrees in signal processing and software engineering from Tampere University of Technology in 2001 and 2013, respectively. He has over 20 years of industry experience in digital imaging topics, including Nokia Corporation where he developed and productized many digital camera algorithms, Intel Corporation where he led the ramp-up of a camera algorithm and image quality team and worked as the Intel Principal Engineer and Imaging Technology Architect, and Xiaomi Technologies where he led the ramp-up of the Tampere site that he is currently leading as a Senior Director and the head of Xiaomi Finland camera R&D. He holds international patents for many digital camera related inventions that have been productized in various types of camera devices.

Igor Curcio

Bell Labs Distinguished Member of Technical Staff
Nokia Technologies, Finland

Igor D.D. Curcio, received a Ph.D. degree in Signal Processing from Tampere University of Technology (Finland). In 1998 he joined Nokia. He is now Bell Labs Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Nokia Technologies, and has been Lecturer in Video Compression at Tampere University of Technology in 2012-2016. Since 1999 Dr. Curcio has been active in 3GPP, MPEG, DLNA, IETF, ARIB where he (co-)authored over 350 standardization contributions. He is currently Convenor of the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG2 on MPEG Technical Requirements.

Dr. Curcio holds about 300 international granted patents, and several are currently pending. He is ACM member since 1990, and IEEE member since 1991. He published over 80 papers in the areas of Mobile Media Applications and Services. Dr. Curcio is currently ATE of the IEEE Communications Magazine, AE of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, Computer Communications, Internet Technology Letters and Journal of Electronic Imaging. He also served in the organizing committees and TPCs of several international IEEE and ACM conferences. Dr. Curcio’s current interest include immersive media services and standardization of omnidirectional video communication protocols in MPEG and 3GPP.

Martti Ilmoniemi

Huawei Technologies, Finland

Martti Ilmoniemi is leading the development of imaging algorithms in Huawei Technologies Oy (Finland) Co. Ltd. He received M.Sc. degree in image processing from Tampere University of Technology in 2004. He has more than 15 years of industry experience in developing and productizing camera image processing algorithms for mobile devices. Before joining Huawei in 2016, Martti worked in Nokia and Microsoft. The main professional topics he has been working on are Image Signal Processor (ISP) and post-processing algorithms in order to optimize the camera image quality.
