IEEE IUS Women in Engineering lunch

FemEng is the Female Engineering Society at the University of Glasgow who, four years ago, initiated the “FemEng in Rwanda” project.

“FemEng in Rwanda” is primarily a project to encourage the participation of young women in science and engineering fields. This is a collaborative initiative with the University of Rwanda, involving four weeks of practical engagement during the summer.

The team consists of six female students in engineering and computing science from the University of Glasgow, six female students in engineering and architecture from the University of Rwanda, and six schoolgirls from various secondary schools in Rwanda.

With the support of many academics, political leaders and organisation leaders, and with funding and practical support from a number of companies, the whole FemEng in Rwanda team is constructing effective and practical workshops to promote science and engineering to 12-15 year old school pupils in Rwanda, covering disciplines from basic computer programming to diagnostic biosensing to 3D printing.

At the IEEE IUS Women in Engineering lunch, we will hear about this inspiring project and learn about some of the challenges and successes and, hopefully, contribute some good engineering ideas.
